Skin Microbiome Review

A review of the skin microbiome, with information on relevant dermatological disorders, including acne is here.  One can expect the skin microbiome, like the gut microbiome, to be linked to an increasingly diverse array of human health conditions. Abstract:

Functioning as the exterior interface of the human body with the environment, skin acts as a physical barrier to prevent the invasion of foreign pathogens while providing a home to the commensal microbiota. The harsh physical landscape of skin, particularly the desiccated, nutrient-poor, acidic environment, also contributes to the adversity that pathogens face when colonizing human skin. Despite this, the skin is colonized by a diverse microbiota. In this Review, we describe amplicon and shotgun metagenomic DNA sequencing studies that have been used to assess the taxonomic diversity of microorganisms that are associated with skin from the kingdom to the strain level. We discuss recent insights into skin microbial communities, including their composition in health and disease, the dynamics between species and interactions with the immune system, with a focus on Propionibacterium acnes, Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus aureus.

Regenerating Human Skin

Stem cell therapy is an exciting approach for many human disorders; here we see an example of an entire epidermis (skin) being regenerated on a child suffering from a life-threatening case of a skin disorder, junctional epidermolysis bullosa. Abstract:

Junctional epidermolysis bullosa (JEB) is a severe and often lethal genetic disease caused by mutations in genes encoding the basement membrane component laminin-332. Surviving patients with JEB develop chronic wounds to the skin and mucosa, which impair their quality of life and lead to skin cancer. Here we show that autologous transgenic keratinocyte cultures regenerated an entire, fully functional epidermis on a seven-year-old child suffering from a devastating, life-threatening form of JEB. The proviral integration pattern was maintained in vivo and epidermal renewal did not cause any clonal selection. Clonal tracing showed that the human epidermis is sustained not by equipotent progenitors, but by a limited number of long-lived stem cells, detected as holoclones, that can extensively self-renew in vitro and in vivo and produce progenitors that replenish terminally differentiated keratinocytes. This study provides a blueprint that can be applied to other stem cell-mediated combined ex vivo cell and gene therapies.

Diet And Psoriasis

While the treatments outlined in the figure (top left) seem to be helpful to most psoriasis patients, those patients should ask their doctors whether a change in diet could be helpful as well.  From the abstract of this paper, we read:

The percentage of patients reporting skin improvement was greatest after reducing alcohol (53.8%), gluten (53.4%), nightshades (52.1%), and after adding fish oil/omega-3 (44.6%), vegetables (42.5%), and oral vitamin D (41%). Specific diets with the most patients reporting a favorable skin response were Pagano (72.2%), vegan (70%), and Paleolithic (68.9%).

Acne lotion



I have previously written about the properties of marigold and included an acne lotion recipe from James Wong (from his TV series Grow Your Own Medicines). For the lotion, Wong used marigold, lavender and geranium extract, which he thickened with vegetarian gelatin.

This summer I decided to test Wong's recipe with a few modifications.  

Here is my recipe:
Harvest 12 fresh marigold flower heads, equal quantity of fresh oregano flowers, and equal quantity of chopped scented geranium leaves (any scented geranium will do). Cover with 250 milliliters of boiling water, steep for 10 minutes. Blend the mixture, strain, add a few drops of tea tree essential oil and 5 Tbsp. of vodka. The lotion will be kept in the refrigerator for maximum of six weeks.  

I did not add gelatin to the lotion; I may try using arrowroot instead, and let you know if it works.The substitution of oregano for lavender flowers should not affect the potency, as oregano itself has very powerful anti-inflammatory properties.

My daughter and I just started using the lotion. In six weeks we will know if there is any effect.
