It is patriotic to smoke and eat to death

Long ago I posted that one of my favorite blogs is this of Dr. Michael Greger. I am subscribed to his daily email videos and news, and a few days ago enjoyed his short video on tobacco and Parkinson's disease: "Is something in tobacco protective against Parkinson’s disease?"

The short video is hilarious and sad at the same time, as it quotes internal tobacco industry memos. In response to the 1964 Surgeon General's statement about smoking and its deleterious effects on health, a memo claimed that smoking “saves the country money by increasing the number of people dying soon after retirement”, and thus, by not having to pay the dead retirees social security, Medicare, etc.

Furthermore, “… one should be prepared to encourage smoking if it can be shown to save the nation money”.

I wonder, when our food industry would come up with something similar. Currently, 7 out of 10 people die from chronic diseases. To a great extent, these diseases are due to our diet and physical inactivity. I guess, we all became patriotic by saving our country $ in social security and Medicare?
